The National
Cornbread Festival

The 13th National Cornbread Cook-Off

Set in the foothills of southern Tennessee, the finals of the National Cornbread Cook-Off, sponsored by Martha White® and Lodge® Cast Iron, took place in South Pittsburg, Tenn., on April 25, 2009. The challenge? Finding the best main dish cornbread recipe in the United States prepared with at least one package of Martha White Cornbread Mix – and cooked in Lodge cast iron cookware. The 10 competitors served up competition with a side of warm, delicious cornbread and judges from across the country savored traditional and unique meal creations.

And the winners are...

  • Grand Prize
Sonya Goergen of Moorhead, Minn., won the first prize of $5,000 and a Five Star® Stainless Steel Range for her Buffalo Chicken Cornbread with Blue Cheese Salad. Just like Buffalo Hot Wings, this recipe marries the spiciness of chicken with the coolness of blue cheese dressing.

Black Olive Cornbread Wedges with Chorizo Tomato Gravy earned Gaynell Lawson of Maryville, Tenn., second place. Lawson took a new spin on an old Southern tradition by combining Mexican chorizo sausage with tomato gravy for a Southwestern flair.
